What is Comprehensive car insurance?

Comprehensive car insurance will give you greater coverage than a Third Party or a Third Party, Fire & Theft policy. In addition to covering damage to third parties (other cars on the road), your car will also be covered for loss or damage caused by fire, theft or attempted theft. Including damage or loss caused to your car in an accident (subject to the terms and conditions of the policy).

Legal Costs

a) Fees for a solicitor we appoint to represent you at a coroner’s inquest or fatal accident enquiry.
b) Fees for legal representatives that we ask to defend you against a charge of manslaughter or causing death by careless or dangerous driving, if we decide there is a reasonable chance of success.

Foreign Use

Our car insurance provides the minimum cover you need by law to drive your car in any EU country or any other country which has made arrangements to meet the minimum insurance requirements of the Commission of the European Union. We will automatically extend this cover to provide your full policy cover (as shown in the schedule) for these countries, for up to 93 days in any one period of insurance. If you need cover for longer or you want to travel to any other country you must contact us before you travel. 

The following cover does not apply while you are using your car abroad:

• Driving other cars. 
• Breakdown assistance.

Accident Recovery

We will also pay the reasonable cost of protecting the vehicle and moving it to the nearest repairer if, as a result of any loss or damage insured under this section, the vehicle cannot be driven. We will pay storage fees up to a maximum cost of €300. We will pay the reasonable cost of delivering it to you after the repair. However, we will not pay more than the reasonable cost of transporting it to your address, as shown in the schedule of insurance.

Fire Brigade Charges

We will pay for local authority fire brigade charges for putting out a fire in your vehicle or for removing the driver or passengers from the vehicle using cutting equipment, up to a limit of €2,200.

New Car Replacement

If within 12 months of having bought a vehicle as new, it is severely damaged or stolen, we will replace it with a new vehicle of the same make and model. 

New car replacement covers you if you are within 12 months of purchasing a vehicle as new and:

a) The car is damaged and the cost of repairs are more than 60% of the manufacturer's list price including taxes, or
b) The car is stolen and not recovered.

Radio/Audio/Navigation Cover

Cover for radio, audio & navigation equipment is provided up to 5% of the current market value of the vehicle before the loss happened or €635, whichever is lower.

Loss of or damage to the following equipment is covered if it is permanently fixed to the vehicle:

• Radio-receiving or transmitting equipment.
• Taxi meter.
• Audio equipment.
• Electronic navigation equipment.

The policy does not cover the loss of or damage to mobile phones and their accessories or spare parts.

Hire Car for Theft

Medical Expenses

We will pay for medical expenses up to €135 for each person injured if the vehicle is involved in an accident, as long as there is no cover in force under another motor insurance policy.

Courtesy Car

If your vehicle is involved in an accident and is repairable, you will be provided with a courtesy car for up to ten days while your vehicle is being repaired by one of our recommended repairers.

Windscreen Cover

The cover you need for those unavoidable windscreen damages, giving you peace of mind with RedClick windscreen cover. We will pay the full cost of repairing or the cost of replacing (less the excess) damaged or broken glass in the windscreen or windows of the vehicle, as long as there has not been any other loss or damage. Claims for windscreen damages will not affect your No Claims Bonus. 

Windscreen cover is standard under our Comprehensive Package. If you have purchased a Third Party Only Package or Third Party, Fire and Theft Package, this benefit is available for an extra premium.

Breakdown Assistance

Our 24-hour breakdown cover provides 24-hour roadside assistance, including home start 365 days a year. Breakdown assistance includes:

• Mechanical breakdown.
• Flat battery.
• Fire.

• Malicious damage.
• Punctures.
• Lost keys, stolen keys, keys broken in the lock or locked in the vehicle.

*Breakdown assistance covers three call-outs maximum per year.

No Claims Discount Protection

Once you have four or more years No Claims Bonus you can pay an extra premium to protect it. You will keep your car insurance No Claims Discount as long as no more than one fault claim arises during any one period of insurance. Although you can protect your No Claims Bonus, your premium may still be affected by any claims we pay.

Personal Accident

In the most serious situations, you want to be sure you have the best cover in place. That is why we will cover the policyholder for death and certain disabilities following an accident involving the insured car up to €6,500.

Our personal accident cover will pay the policyholder or their legal representative €6,500/£5,000 if the policyholder is accidentally injured while travelling in or getting into or out of the insured vehicle and within three months this injury alone results in death, permanent loss of sight in one or both eyes or loss of one or more limbs. The most we will pay in any one period of insurance is €6,500.

We will not pay this benefit for any injury or death resulting from suicide or attempted suicide or anyone who is convicted for driving while under the influence of drink or drugs at the time of the accident.

Loss of Keys

If the car keys or lock transmitter of the vehicle are lost or stolen, we will pay up to €850 for replacing the door and boot locks, the ignition and steering lock and the lock transmitter, as long as we are satisfied that the person who may have your keys or transmitter knows where the vehicle is. 

Claims for loss of keys will not affect your No Claims Bonus.

Open Drive

Open driving provides cover for other drivers to use your vehicle if they meet the following requirements:

• The driver is between the ages of 25 and 70, inclusive.
• The driver has your consent  or on your instruction as the policyholder.
• The driver holds a full Irish, UK or EU driving license.
• The driver has not had any accidents, claims, convictions or penalty points in the last three years.

Excess Options

You can reduce your insurance premium by increasing the excess on your policy. The standard excess on RedClick car insurance policies is €300. This excess is what you pay if a claim is made on your policy, before your insurer would make any payment.

What's the difference between Third Party and fully Comprehensive?

Third Party cover provides cover which is required under the RTA and covers the vehicle whilst on a road or in a public place, but remaining within the territorial limits However, it does not cover any damage sustained to the insured vehicle for instance by fire, theft or accidental damage.

Third Party usually covers your legal liability for: Injuries to other people including your passengers or damage to other peoples' property. 

What is the meaning of fully Comprehensive?

Comprehensive cover is Third Party, Fire & Theft plus cover against the loss or damage (accidental or malicious) to the insured vehicle.

Which is better Third Party or Comprehensive?

This is more a question of what it is you are looking for.

Third Party Only cover will provide what is needed to meet RTA requirement. Comprehensive cover, on the other hand, provides a broader range of features.
